People's City, Yangpu Example: Veteran's Evergreen Spirit - Donating to Education Warms the Campus February 18,2025
A great era calls for a great spirit, and a noble cause requires exemplary leadership. Five years have passed since the "People's City" concept was proposed. To strive to write the "three major articles" of "New Practice of People's City, Re-innovation and Development, and Revitalizing Yangpu with One Mind," to fully leverage the exemplary and leading role of advanced models, and to create a positive atmosphere of learning from role models, respecting the advanced, and striving for excellence, the Publicity Department of the District Committee, the District Civilization Office, and Xinmin Evening News jointly launched the theme promotion activity of "People's City · Yangpu Example." This initiative aims to promote the entire district to bravely shoulder new missions in building a people's city, stimulate new momentum for the development of a people's city, create a new vision of a better life in a people's city, pioneer new paths in the governance of a people's city, and showcase a new atmosphere in Party building.
Let's hear the story of Wang Zeli, a veteran and recipient of the 2023 "Top Ten Good People and Good Deeds of Spiritual Civilization in Yangpu District."
Wang Zeli, 85 years old, has 62 years of Party membership and 41 years of military service. Before retiring from his position as a senior engineer at the Shanghai Aerospace Bureau, he had already been awarded the First-Class Merit once and the Third-Class Merit once. Even after leaving the front line of national defense construction, he remains concerned about the country's development. He not only participates in the Jiangwan Veteran Cadre Center's lecture team, entering military camps, campuses, industrial parks, and communities to tell red stories, spread red genes, and inherit the red spirit. Moreover, despite his renowned frugality, he has participated in numerous fundraising events, offering support to people in impoverished and disaster-stricken areas. He also regularly uses his savings to fund undergraduate veterans from economically disadvantaged families at Fudan University, demonstrating a veteran's compassionate heart and bringing warmth to the campus and its young comrades.
In 1960, shortly after joining the army, Wang Zeli participated in the battle to shoot down an enemy high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, earning a First-Class Merit. In 1974, as a company commander, Wang Zeli once again excellently completed his mission, personally awarded the Third-Class Merit, and his company was also commended by higher authorities. In 1978, Wang Zeli was transferred to work in the Shanghai Aerospace Bureau system, becoming an expert in the field of radar. He also postponed his retirement for 5 years due to work needs.
After retirement, Wang Zeli still did not forget his mission, always concerned about how to promote and inherit the Party's red genes and the military's fine traditions. After coming to the Jiangwan Veteran Cadre Center, he joined the lecture team, sharing his work experience, telling red stories, and performing red classics in various Party history story meetings, symposiums, and cultural performances. He also went into military camps, campuses, industrial parks, and communities to spread red genes.
He also proactively contacted the center, expressing his intention to fund outstanding and financially struggling college students at Fudan University, wanting to contribute to the country's talent cultivation once again. Following recommendations from Fudan University and after careful consideration, Wang Zeli chose two students—both military veterans from financially strained backgrounds—to receive regular financial assistance. This support aimed to alleviate their economic pressure and encourage them to focus more fully on their studies. In addition to financial aid, Wang Zeli also showed concern for the two students' studies and lives. He often told the college students about his experiences in the army. The two students were deeply moved by Comrade Wang Zeli's heroic deeds and expressed that they would definitely study hard, repay society, and serve the country in the future.
Over the years, Mr. Wang has always adhered to a frugal lifestyle, but enthusiastically devoted himself to public welfare. He has participated in many fundraising activities, sending warmth to people in impoverished areas and disaster areas, and has always been committed to helping people in need, spreading love and bringing hope to more people. In 2022, he once again used his pension to create two educational funds, donating them to students at Fudan University's Law School and School of Communication Science and Engineering. He encouraged the recipients to love the Party and country, study diligently, make the most of their time at university, and strive to contribute to national defense communication and legal development in the future.
