Tracing the Footprints of the People's City: A "Reading Marathon" Inspires Volunteer Service in Young Hearts. January 15,2025

Recently, the "Tracing the Footprints of the People's City" Yangpu Urban Storytelling Volunteer Service initiative, a project dedicated to urban renewal, has launched with great enthusiasm in our district.

Changbai 228 Neighborhood, a model of urban renewal in Shanghai and a key component of Shanghai's 15-minute community life circle, preserves the last remaining historical memory of Shanghai's "Two Ten Thousand Households" workers' housing estates. With the objective of promoting broader understanding and appreciation for the transformation of this area, the Social Work Department of the District Committee, the Changbai New Village Sub-district Social Work Office, and the League Working Committee cooperatively organized the "Changbai 228 Urban Storytelling Series," incorporating a Changbai 228 Neighborhood Youth Reading Marathon. This initiative seeks to leverage volunteer storytelling to further illuminate the human element and vibrant characteristics of the People's City.

On the day of the event, a group of young people from Changbai arrived on time at the Shanghai Workers' New Village Exhibition Hall. Immersed in the vivid and engaging explanations of volunteer docents, they felt as if they had traveled through time, personally experiencing the extraordinary transformation of the 228 Neighborhood from a workers' new village to a modern community. They became deeply engaged with every historical detail and every behind-the-scenes story, their eyes sparkling with curiosity and affection for this land.

Subsequently, the children gathered at the 228 Party-Masses Service Center, where three volunteers from different generations shared personal stories and reflections on the community's evolution and the profound changes in their lives. These genuine and moving accounts touched the hearts of every child present, fostering a deeper understanding of the spirit of volunteerism among the youth.

Throughout the event, the children listened attentively and actively participated in the quiz session, raising many interesting questions about the stories. They demonstrated enthusiasm and curiosity, as well as a strong interest in their community's culture. In a joyful atmosphere of laughter and cheers, they acquired knowledge and experienced growth and happiness. This "Tracing the Footprints of the People's City" urban storytelling volunteer service project not only informed the young people about the history and current state of Changbai 228 Neighborhood but also inspired them to consider volunteer service and community governance.

Moving forward, Changbai New Village Sub-district will continue to develop the "Changbai 228 Urban Storytelling Series" platform, creating more opportunities for Changbai youth to showcase their talents. The sub-district will also invite young people and their parents to participate in various volunteer service activities, allowing them to immerse themselves in our district's historical and cultural heritage, the changes in urban construction and development, and the improvements in people's lives. Together, they will contribute to building a more beautiful and caring People's City, collaboratively authoring a new chapter for the People's City.
