5th Anniversary of People's City Concept | Foreign Writers Experience Transformation through Time in City Walk August 14,2024
This year marks the 5th anniversary of the concept of people's city. As the place where it was first proposed, Yangpu is thriving with a flourishing digital economy and a dynamic, youthful spirit. Let's immerse ourselves in this city that is becoming increasingly "YOUNG" for the people...
On August 13, the 11th Shanghai Book Fair • Shanghai International Literary Week kicked off. As part of the event, the "International Literary Week" field trip brought together 9 renowned foreign writers from the U.S., France, Australia and other countries in Shanghai. To effectively leverage their influence on the promotion of the city's image, on the afternoon of the opening day, they were given a tour of Yangpu, visiting Changbai Neighborhood 228 to experience the brilliant transformation of Shanghai's urban renewal.
As the only existing historical neighborhood with 20,000 households in Shanghai, Neighborhood 228 is a testament to the century-old industrial legacy of Yangpu and an important practice of Shanghai's urban development. Its longstanding architectural style and modern community planning drew the attention of the writers. Upon arriving at the workers' community with red walls and simple tiles, and walking through the rows of old two-story houses, the writers immersed themselves in the past, present and future of Neighborhood 228. They also visited public spaces such as the Yangpu Neighborhood Community Business Center, the Neighborhood 228 Sports Health Center and the Panda Canteen, keenly experiencing the essence of community life—vibrant spirit, warm human connections and the enticing tastes that make it a beloved destination for residents.
"The residents here are very fortunate!" Mylene Mathieu from France was deeply impressed by the community culture and infrastructure in Neighborhood 228. She said, "Neighborhood 228 not only preserves a wealth of historical and cultural heritage, but also blends seamlessly with modern touches. This visit has allowed me to deeply experience the wisdom and charm of Yangpu's urban renewal."
"Upon entering the Shanghai Workers' Community Exhibition Hall, the writers delved into the planning, construction, development and renovation of Shanghai Workers' Communities, immersing themselves in the production, life and entertainment scenes of the Chinese working class in the 20th century. Antiques, vintage photos and classic brand products in the hall brought the past to life. The writers showed a keen interest in the workers' community culture, pausing to observe or engaging in interactive exchanges in the exhibition area. Throughout the visit, they stopped to take photos, preserving these valuable historical moments."
The tidy and orderly community environment of Neighborhood 228, the warm and harmonious neighborhood interactions, and the comprehensive and vivid historical displays left a lasting impression on the writers. This visit enhanced their understanding of Yangpu's urban renewal and further promoted Shanghai's city image. We anticipate that the writers will transform this memorable journey into written narratives, enticing more people to explore Yangpu and Shanghai, and to discover the unique charm of China's urban renewal.
