5th Anniversary of People's City Concept | Bus Stop Renovated for Elderly Accessibility August 08,2024

This year marks the 5th anniversary of the concept of people's city. As the place where it was first proposed, Yangpu is thriving with a flourishing digital economy and a dynamic, youthful spirit. Let's immerse ourselves in this city that is becoming increasingly "YOUNG" for the people...

The elderly-friendly renovation of bus stops is a considerate measure to enhance the travel experience for the elderly. Recently, the quality improvement project for the bay-style bus stop slow area on Huangxing Road has been completed, according to the Yangpu Construction and Administration Commission. The addition of accessible ramps and the construction of all-age friendly walkways have improved public transit facilities, significantly enhancing the travel experience for residents.

Prior to the project's commencement, the bus stop's paving was worn out, of poor quality and severely damaged; the adjacent street had a low-quality texture, and the outdated street facilities marred the urban landscape. Moreover, the bus stop lacked accessible ramps and tactile paving for the visually impaired, showing a deficiency in considerate design.

The renovated bus stop now boasts a more aesthetically pleasing travel interface

On the morning of August 7, passengers were waiting for buses at the Huangxing Road/Changyang Road bus stop. Despite the intense sunlight, the shade from the canopy at the platform and the complementary green space under the bridge provided some respite from the heat.

The elderly-friendly construction of the bus stop adhered to the design philosophy of "people orientation, demand drive, safety, convenience and adaptation to local conditions". The Yangpu Municipal Transportation Center (YMTC) has conducted scientific design of the bus stop, utilizing sesame gray granite for paving. The color of the paving is consistent with the sidewalks on either side of the road, ensuring a harmonious overall appearance. Notably, the large granite pavers offer greater comfort and visual appeal compared to the previous brick paving.

Ms. Chang, a local resident familiar with the bus stop, said, "Now, the waiting area's surface is very smooth. It's much more convenient for elderly passengers to wait for the bus, and it feels great!"

The addition of accessible ramps and tactile paving facilitates smooth travel

At the Huangxing Road/Changyang Road bus stop, new crosswalk lines have been added between the platform and the sidewalk. Additionally, curb ramps have been set on the platform side facing the crosswalk. These curb ramps have a smooth, slip-resistant surface, and their lower edge is level with the road surface, ensuring unobstructed access and providing ease of entry and exit for wheelchairs, strollers and carts.

In addition to the improvements mentioned, a distinct tactile paving has been set about 5 centimeters from the curb to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating by the sense of touch on their feet. The tactile paving extends the full length of the bus stop, and at the turning points, there are tactile indicators to guide them. For any existing obstacles or potential hazards for the visually impaired, the project has used warning tactile paving to encircle these areas. Notably, the entrance and exit of the sidewalk have been set with curb ramps that are connected to the platform, and the tactile paving system on the sidewalk is integrated with that of the bus stop.

Citizen Mr. Liu said that the new accessible ramps and tactile paving make it easier for wheelchair users, the visually impaired and other passengers with mobility difficulties to access and use the bus stop. "This ensures the mobility of people with disabilities and demonstrates the society's inclusiveness and care for all groups," he said.

According to YMTC, the Huangxing Road/Changyang Road bus stop is one of the key stops in Shanghai's transportation network, served by bus routes 137, 538, 842 and 8. The western platform measures approximately 40 meters in length and 6 meters in width, while the eastern platform is about 21 meters long and 6 meters wide. The bus stop is conveniently located near Ningguo Road Station on Subway Line 12 and is surrounded by popular destinations, primarily offices and shopping malls, which attract a significant amount of pedestrian traffic.

Slow traffic serves not only as a means of transportation, but also plays a vital role in leisure, recreation, physical fitness, improving public spaces and revitalizing urban life. Therefore, the comprehensive enhancement of ancillary road facilities is more than just road optimization; it helps to create an inclusive, comfortable public transportation environment friendly to all ages, increase residents' comfort, improve their cultural life and develop more interactive shared neighborhoods.
