5th Anniversary of People's City Concept | Incorporating Child-Friendly Philosophy into Urban Governance: "One-Meter Perspective" for New Practice of People's City August 05,2024
This year marks the 5th anniversary of the concept of people's city. As the place where it was first proposed, Yangpu is thriving with a flourishing digital economy and a dynamic, youthful spirit. Let's immerse ourselves in this city that is becoming increasingly "YOUNG" for the people...
Child-friendly development is a vivid practice of the concept of people's city. In Yangpu's journey to become a leading child-friendly practice area, there has been an ongoing enhancement of software services alongside the development of physical infrastructure.
This summer, Yangpu's child-friendly summer camps took place at the Yangpu Riverside Women and Children's Home. Recently, the Youtong Young Journalist Social Practice Summer Camp, themed "Children + Participation", kicked off. Over 40 young "journalists" from Yangpu embarked on a two-day social practice, enabling the children to offer ideas for the new practice of the people's City from their unique "one-meter" perspectives, and allowing the city to earnestly listen to the children's innocent voices.
Through the informative masterclasses and video making class for the young hosts and journalists, eye-opening field visits and hands-on outdoor interviews, this event encouraged students to learn to feel the places they live in with hearts, to document life, express their needs and convey their voices with keen observation and authentic expression.
In the masterclass for the young hosts, the instructor shared her expertise step by step, encouraging the students to speak out confidently. The students demonstrated eloquence, critical thinking and adept summarization skills, presenting well-designed interview outlines prepared for field interviews. In the video making class, they learned about composition and skills, creating unique videos and capturing cherished memories.
In addition, the children visited a television station, following the teacher's steps to witness the development of domestic animations, and stepping into a dynamic and cool studio that they had only seen on TV before, indulging in the experience of being "hosts".; They also visited the China Art Museum, strolling through corridors adorned with oil paintings, listening to the guides' narration of the stories within the artworks.
With pens, they recorded every detail; with interviews, they captured highlights; and with cameras, they froze moments. In the concluding practical interview session, the young journalists, posing as interviewers, asked concise, specific and logical questions to the guides. They listened attentively, recorded the guides' views and ideas on oil paintings, and courteously thanked them after the interviews, expertly balancing the interview atmosphere.
Since 2021, the Office of the Yangpu Child and Woman Work Committee has implemented the School-Community Child-Friendly Growth Project in Yangpu, creating "Youtong (Child-Friendly) Councils" in local primary and secondary schools. This initiative aims to inspire children to take an interest in their surroundings, engage in urban planning, and build a "think tank" of volunteers dedicated to child development to provide social support for children's involvement in various domains. To date, the project has achieved full coverage across 12 neighborhood communities and has set up Youtong Young Journalist Stations in 31 local kindergartens and schools, amplifying children's voices in Yangpu.
The Youtong Young Journalist Social Practice Summer Camp, a collaborative effort between the Office of the Yangpu Child and Woman Work Committee and SMG Shanghai Little Star, offers a summer training program for young journalists. Through two days of intensive and specialized mentoring, the participants were equipped to independently document and report on council activities, gathering well-defined and representative opinions and suggestions. The camp also fostered children's participation in discussions, encouraging them to engage with social issues, express their views freely and contribute to Yangpu's child-friendly urban development.
The recent 9th Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Yangpu District Committee, through deliberation, adopted the Opinions of the CPC Yangpu District Committee on Implementing the Spirit of the 3rd Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the 5th Plenary Session of the 12th CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Putting into Full Effect the Concept of People's City, Further Deepening Comprehensive Reform, and Leading Efforts in Striving to Build the Best Practice Place for the Concept of People's City. It mentioned that this year, Yangpu will leverage its selection as one of Shanghai's first leading child-friendly practice areas to develop a "1+1+N" child-friendly public service network across the entire district.
On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the important concept of people's city, the Yangpu Riverside Women and Children's Home has delivered four summer camps in the form of "children +", representing an innovative step in building a child-friendly public service network from children's perspective, focusing on their practical needs in education, health, culture and public services. With child participation at the core and prioritizing children's development, the approach establishes a child participation system based in schools, linked with community efforts, and enriched with social resources, ensuring the comprehensive protection of children's rights to survival, development, protection and participation.
