Gengmei Museum Opens at Changyang Campus, Linking East and West through Art May 22,2025
On May 20, the Gengmei Museum opened at Changyang Campus. As China's first museum to showcase porcelain art from ten countries, it combines cultural exchange, education, cultural innovation, and exhibition in one space. This museum not only ushers in a new era of cultural fusion between the East and West but also acts as a bridge to create an innovative hub that connects entrepreneurial spirit with humanistic values in Yangpu.
The Gengmei Museum was established by Laszlo Parakovits, a distinguished Canadian antique collector, and his wife, Sun Jianwei, an international collector. The museum focuses on the "300-year narrative of Sino-Western porcelain cultural exchange", through a collection of porcelain artworks from ten countries - Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Czech, the U.S., Japan, and China, it offers a comprehensive view of how traditional Chinese porcelain has profoundly shaped Western and global porcelain art, culture, and civilization. It also underscores the pivotal role of Chinese porcelain in driving the success of Europe's first industrial revolution and fostering cultural exchange and mutual learning between the East and the West.
During the opening ceremony, distinguished guests from diverse backgrounds ascended the stage to extend their heartfelt greetings and congratulations on the launch of the Gengmei Museum. Sun said, "I created the Gengmei World Art Museum as a way to honor my dad. He was one of the first textile machinery engineers in New China, and he used to say, 'You need both warp and weft to make a piece of cloth.' To me, these porcelain pieces are like the threads that hold civilizations together. I really hope that young people can see how Chinese wisdom has helped create the beautiful tapestry of world civilization."
Speaking at the event, Xi Rongqing, Vice President of STI Group, noted that this year marks the 10th anniversary of Changyang Campus, and the launch of the Gengmei Museum could not have come at a better time. He hoped that the museum will not only become a new cultural icon in Yangpu and across Shanghai but also open a new gateway for young people and entrepreneurs to explore the beauty of art.
Step into the exhibition hall, where the themes "East Meets West" and "Cultural Co-creation" come to life. This dynamic space, filled with diverse exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural interactions, is designed to showcase the diversity and charm of global art. It also seeks to ignite the younger generation's enthusiasm and innovative spirit in the cultural and creative industry.
Looking ahead, the Gengmei Museum will center on the narrative of Sino-Western cultural interactions. It aspires to evolve into an integrated hub that unites cultural education, life, investment, exchange, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Employing a strategic approach that uses key points to drive wider development, the museum will create a seamless cycle from culture to resources, product transformation, and business incubation. This initiative is poised to cultivate dynamic cultural enterprises, ultimately benefiting individuals, communities, and the country.
Furthermore, at the opening ceremony, the Gengmei Museum entered into a "strategic cooperation agreement" with organizations and art institutions, including the Shanghai Dream Comes True Commonweal Foundation, the Jingdezhen Shangyu Ceramic Advanced Research Institute, the SUIBE Museum, the Shanghai Zhongqi Art Museum, and the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum. This collaboration is designed to amplify the cultural narratives of China and beyond, with a strategic focus on achieving mutual success by translating the cultural and creative industries into profitable ventures for businesses. Together, they aim to forge a path of shared progress.
Changyang Campus, a municipal cultural and creative industry park in Shanghai, is leveraging a dual-engine strategy of "tech innovation" and "cultural creativity" to attract and accelerate the convergence of global innovation elements. The inauguration of the Gengmei Museum signifies the harmonious fusion of the park's tech-driven "hard innovation" and its humanistic "soft power". This art museum, rising from the vibrant land of innovation, will emerge as a new cultural and artistic landmark in Yangpu. It will embark on a journey with every dreamer and creator, steering towards the boundless frontier of civilized innovation.
