Exploring Educational Exchanges and Cooperation: Yangpu-Brazil Roundtable on Sustainable Development Takes Place September 24,2024
Recently, the Yangpu-Brazil Roundtable on Sustainable Development took place at the Scientist Community. The event was directed by the Ministry of Education of Brazil, co-hosted by the Consulate General of Brazil in Shanghai and the Yangpu District People's Government, and organized by the Yangpu Education Bureau (YEB), the Yangpu Bureau of Talent Affairs (YBTA), the Foreign Affairs Office of Yangpu District People's Government, and the Brazil Center.
As part of the 5th China-Brazil Innovation Week and the second special roundtable on the in-depth cooperation between Yangpu and Brazil in achieving sustainable development goals, the event brought together Kátia Helena Serafina Cruz Schweickardt, Secretary of Basic Education of the Ministry of Education of Brazil; Márcia Serra Ferreira, President of the Brazilian Association for the Promotion of Higher Education Professionals; Li Qi'nan, Deputy Head of Yangpu District; Pedro Pessotto, Consul for Public Relations at the Consulate General of Brazil in Shanghai; Jose Antonio Puppim de Oliveira, a senior expert at Brazil's top think tank - Getulio Vargas Foundation, the initiator of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Professionals, and a visiting professor at the Institute for Global Public Policy, Fudan University; Chen Fan, Deputy Director of the General Office of the Yangpu District People's Government; Wu Qunying, Deputy Director of YEB; Qian Fei, Deputy Director of YBTA; and Wu Jie, Coordinator of the Brazil Center.
In his address, Li mentioned that after years of in-depth cooperation, Yangpu has become a participant and best practice area for deepening cooperation and friendship between China and Brazil. He expected the two sides to strengthen cooperation and communication in education, explore a new path to promote the development of innovative education with a focus on innovative education and talent cultivation, and jointly launch a new model for cultivating innovative talents, injecting new impetus for enhanced and vibrant sustainable development and cooperation between China and Brazil.
Schweickardt, in her address, expressed her appreciation for the innovation, openness, and inclusiveness she experienced during her visits to the Brazil Center, the WorldSkills Museum, and the Scientist Community. She also extended her congratulations on the advancements in innovation and sustainable development between Yangpu and Brazil. She provided an overview of Brazil's basic education system and expressed her aspiration to leverage the Brazil Center to promote fruitful cooperation in education and talent cultivation between Brazil and Yangpu, especially as we mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil.
In the roundtable discussion, Qian introduced the progress and achievements of talent work in Yangpu. Wu outlined the basic education and made suggestions on STEAM education and international cooperation. Márcia shared insights on Brazil's approach to higher education and talent cultivation. Jose introduced the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Professionals and the Shanghai Learning Event for Gold Medalists of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Professionals, sharing his vision for deepening educational ties between Brazil and Yangpu, informed by his role as a visiting professor at Fudan University. Pedro offered advice for bilateral cooperation from the viewpoint of the Consulate General of Brazil in Shanghai.
With a focus on the topics discussed at the roundtable, the attending leaders and guests exchanged views fully and freely. The two sides reached a consensus on sustainable development and educational cooperation, leveraging the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the development of the Brazil Center to enhance collaboration in various educational areas, such as basic education twinning, teacher training, joint talent cultivation, student exchange programs, Chinese-Portuguese bilingual training, and STEAM education.
In a symbolic gesture marking the commencement of a new phase in sustainable educational cooperation, Márcia and Li exchanged gifts. Yangpu will fully promote the construction of the Brazil Center, create favorable conditions for Brazilian educational institutions, research institutes, business associations, and companies to settle in Yangpu, and work together for a win-win future.
