Garden House Rejuvenated as New Public Gardening Center in Yangpu April 26,2024

The gardening center is an important carrier to serve the quality life of the public and promote the high-quality development of the flower industry, and it is also a vivid practice of the important concept of the people's city. To meet the public demand for home gardening, and further advance the forest chief system, Dinghai Road Sub-district joined hands with the sub-district's community planners, and the team of Dai Daixin, Associate Professor of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, to rebuild the old garden house in Lane 3061, Yangshupu Road into a public gardening center, which will provide the public with one-stop services, including green policies, gardening counseling and scientific knowledge.

Walking into the community of Lane 3061, Yangshupu Road, you will be greeted by old townhouses. Some of them are detached, with green plants in front gardens; some are shared, with neighbors working together to beautify their home. In front of the community neighborhood center, the original concrete floor has been replaced by vintage lattice tiles; scattered potted plants have been arranged in order on iron racks…This is the "fragrant corner" created by the planner, not only for green plants that were scattered, but also to let their fragrance heal people physically and mentally.

This project was designed with the concept of elderly orientation, healing and entropy reduction. Every detail of the design is exclusive to this community. The design team of Prof. Dai Daixin at Tongji University paved cobblestones in the drainage ditches and added some ornaments; the greenery at the street corners was renovated to retain and drain rainwater. In addition, the project applied the concepts of "non-waste" and "sustainability" to the whole community through micro renewal.

More than 60% of community residents in Lane 3061, Yangshupu Road are aged 60 or above, most of whom are retired. Many of them, who have grown up here since childhood, are reluctant to move away because of their deep love for their native land. The community is being rejuvenated all time, with flowers and grasses added to the previously overgrown areas, which is pleasing to the eyes and meets the residents' need for a good life.

The core idea of building a livable community is involving all. The community residents got involved in the design, planning and construction of the gardening center by expressing their wishes and offering their ideas.

To keep the gardening center vibrant, space has been intentionally set aside in the areas of "Healing Corridor" and "Healing Vegetable Garden". There are only iron trellises and small wooden stakes so that the residents can dress up the space by themselves through vertical greening or planting of fruits and vegetables.

Turning a corner of the community into a big stage of self governance that carries the memories of the community, promotes the fusion of the community and shares gardening techniques, the gardening center is a "gift" that touches the hearts of the residents. In the future, the Forest Chief Office of Dinghai Road Sub-district will provide various public services, to deliver the concept of green life and greening services to the community, creating an effective platform of exchange, learning, display and improvement for the residents fond of gardening.
