Adolescents Master New Skills in Outdoor Development at Gongqing Forest Park May 30,2024

Shanghai Gongqing Forest Park serves as an urban attraction reminiscent of a Monet painting, with its vibrant floral displays and lush greenery enveloping visitors in an atmosphere akin to a natural oxygen bar. It brims with vibrancy and stands as a place of natural splendor.

Recently, the Lantian Neighborhood Committee of Wujiaochang Sub-district organized a half-day growth camp excursion for community adolescents at Gongqing Forest Park, attracting participation from 15 families in the community. The event aimed to diversify the extracurricular activities of adolescents, promote the knowledge of outdoor safety and enhance their self-protection skills.

On the vast lawn of the park, a growth camp event, well planned by the Lantian Neighborhood Committee, was underway. Engaging in games such as "Cat and Mouse", the children swiftly overcame their initial shyness, dashing across the lawn with unrestrained joy, taking on a lively atmosphere. During the event, the children are tasked with weaving a spider web through teamwork. "Rope skills are widely applied in outdoor sports. When there is a sudden danger at home, an effective rope weaving enables a swift escape from danger," said a parent participating in the activity.

The versatility of ropes in outdoor settings extends well beyond what one might consider. They can be employed to assist in navigating perilous terrain, used as a drying line for camping setups, transformed into a simple stretcher in case of an injury, and deployed for rescue missions in times of crisis... The children practiced repeatedly, honing their skills to aid in climbing.

"Have any of you seen a spider web? What does it look like?" "A spider web is a big circle with smaller circles inside, all connected by threads in the middle." The children, guided by their teacher, attempted to weave a spider web based on their own understanding. "I think the spacing here is a bit wide, it needs to be reinforced," "Why don't we create the circles first and then connect them in the middle..." The children, immersed in the experience, worked in tandem, engaged in collective deliberation, and proactively discussed solutions when encountering challenges. This process not only enhanced their collaborative and communicative abilities, but also strengthened their sense of collective consciousness within a team setting.

Growth is not just about physical and behavioral changes; it is more importantly about achieving self-reliance on a spiritual level. The children learned earnestly and played heartily, fostering their all-around physical and mental well-being. "Nature is the best classroom for children. By organizing such community parent-child activities, we allowed children to cultivate a sense of community and also enhanced the friendship among residents. Looking ahead, we will intensify our efforts to find out the needs of our residents and design cultural and entertainment activities that are well received by the residents," said a head of the Lantian Neighborhood Committee.
