Fervor for Extreme Sports Persists! Come to Yangpu on Children's Day: Extreme Sports Carnival & Music Festival to Ignite Early Summer May 27,2024

Statistics indicate that over 1 billion people globally are passionate about extreme sports (X-sports), and some 200 million people in China have engaged in extreme sports.

With extreme sports gaining Olympic status, trendy and dynamic disciplines such as BMX, skateboarding, parkour and land surfing have captured the hearts of the youth. In celebration of the upcoming Children's Day, the Yangpu Sports Bureau (YSB), in collaboration with the Shanghai Extreme Sports Association (SESA) and various sports and cultural companies, will host an exuberant "Children's Day Extreme Sports Carnival & Music Festival" at iconic SMP Skatepark, a renowned landmark for extreme sports in China.

Extreme sports encompass rock climbing, skateboarding, rollerblading, BMX, surfing, extreme biking, parkour, etc. As BMX freestyle, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing have become official events at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, these sports have fully entered the mainstream, drawing in a growing number of participants. Statistics show that there are more than 1 billion extreme sports lovers globally, with some 200 million people in China having emerged in extreme sports. Enthusiasts typically make at least two trips per year, with spending ranging from 3,500 to 15,000 yuan. Over the past five years, there has been a consistent rise in the registration of businesses related to extreme sports.

Yangpu stands as one of the earliest cities in Shanghai and China to embrace extreme sports, home to the country's largest extreme sports park—SMP Skatepark. For consecutive years, it has been the stage for top-tier global extreme sports events like the X GAME at Jiangwan Stadium. As the Paris Olympics is drawing near, with the recent conclusion of the Olympic qualifiers in Shanghai, the passion for extreme sports is reaching new heights.

As the Olympic qualifiers approached, a multitude of extreme sports veterans from around the world flocked to SMP Skatepark to make their mark, gearing up for the Shanghai leg of the Olympic qualifiers. In this context, the carnival is more than just an eagerly anticipated annual event for extreme sports aficionados; it stands as a vivid portrayal of the thriving growth of extreme sports globally.

The 2024 Shanghai Extreme Sports Carnival is hosted by YSB, organized by SESA, and co-organized by Shanghai Quanyi Sports Culture Co., Ltd., Shanghai Xingsheng Sports Culture Development Co., Ltd., Shanghai Amazing Elephant Sports Development Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Xiake Cultural Communication Co., Ltd.

The competition features four events: the BMX Open, the Youth Skateboarding Open, the Land Surfing Skateboard Open and the Children's Parkour Timing Race. The BMX Open, Youth Skateboarding Open and Land Surfing Skateboard Open each have U9, U13 and open age categories, while the Children's Parkour Timing Race falls into U7, U10 and U13 categories. The BMX Open consists of the skillful and fast-paced Obstacle Challenge Race and Street Park Race; the Youth Skateboarding Open includes the Bowl Race, Street Race and High Jump Race; the Land Surfing Skateboard Open features the Course Speed Race and Surf Chasing Race. These well-crafted events not only put athletes' individual skills and bravery to the test, but also highlight the charm of diversity of extreme sports.

Through the event, the organizers aimed to create a stage for extreme sports aficionados to show themselves, and to promote extreme sports culture, with a vision to motivate the youth to seek pleasure, develop physically and mentally, and shape their character through extreme sports. Besides, they seek to display the dynamism and modern spirit of Shanghai's young generation. They extended a warm invitation to all extreme sports enthusiasts to partake in the grand event and experience the limitless possibilities of extreme sports.
