Learning While Traveling: "Silver Generation" Can Have Romantic Dreams May 24,2024

To meet the needs of the "silver generation" for high-quality elderly care, Shanghai University for the Elderly (SUE) has developed more and more "Learning While Traveling in Shanghai" projects. On May 21, over 100 elderly students of SUE's "Happy Learning Lecture" stepped out of the campus and headed to the North Bund for the first time for a wonderful journey of art. During the trip, they listened to expert reports, learned classical arts, explored the city's culture, and experienced the beauty of life.

The "Happy Learning Lecture", hosted by SUE, created an artistic exchange platform for the students, and offered more than the 100 elderly students a moment of "small but certain happiness" to escape from household chores.

In the event, Luo Yier, the founder of artistic talk show, an independent curator and a cross-cultural researcher; and Zhang Kangming, a famous music producer, a cross-disciplinary healing musician and founder of Oriental Wood Band, jointly presented a spectacular lecture to the students under the theme of "Let Art Heal - The Power of Music and Fine Arts" in the form of artistic talk show.

With the Rhine in Europe as the clue, the two artists took the elderly students to appreciate the artistic charm of painters and musicians who went down in history, and through the stories behind music and painting masterpieces, they helped the students discover a sense of constancy and certainty amid the uncertainties of life, bridging the gaps of understanding beyond words.

Mr. Zhang, aged 70, was a music teacher at a middle school before retirement. He devoted his life to music teaching, and being able to start from his beloved profession and achieving healing for both mind and soul through the blend of visual and auditory delights is his biggest gain in this trip. 65-year-old Uncle Wang loves photography and travel. This event allowed him to indulge in the joy of photography. He said the novel course is refreshing, as it combines music and fine arts to make the students experience the power.

The project has invited leading experts from various industries, crafted fine reports that combine universality with distinctive features, meet specific needs and are of guiding significance, and offered lecture series such as "Groundbreaking", "Current Political Affairs", "Healthcare", "Culture and Art", and "Grandparenting". The project was selected as a "Branded Lifelong Learning Project" by the country and the city. So far, more than 140 lectures have been delivered, with over 100 million views online and offline.

The cooperation between SUE's "Happy Learning Lecture" and SETV, as well as Viking Cruises Shanghai represents not only an experience and appreciation of Western art, but also an innovative exploration of the teaching form of elderly education. Relying on "Happy Learning Lecture", SUE will pool more social resources, explore diverse teaching models such as "learning in doing and learning in traveling", develop more learning travel projects to enrich the life of the elderly, and allow them to relish the beauty of the sunset years with the joy of lifelong learning.
