Crossing 70 Years, I'll Meet You at 228

As Shanghai's only existing complete set of "20,000 households" historical residential area, the 228 neighborhood is not only a testament to Yangpu's "century-old industry" history but also carries significant urban development practices. In April 2023, the 228 neighborhood transformed and returned as a public service center radiating to its surroundings, featuring a museum that preserves the city's memories. It offers residents the "15-minute community life circle" experience, becoming a hub for quality community living.

Preserving Historical Context, Retaining Yangpu Memories

During the renovation process of the 228 neighborhood, the approach of "excavating, reconstructing, strengthening, and passing on" was adopted to preserve and repair some old buildings completely. Some were merged and rebuilt, forming a central plan with two horizontal and two vertical alignments, as well as a landscape layout with dense trees and inward cohesion, showcasing the spatial form of the original external yards and internal courtyards.

Every building in the 228 neighborhood narrates the city's memories along the historical corridor. Like the brick-red window edges and plain walls, they may not be large, but they are highly aesthetic, revealing a "small yet beautiful" refined atmosphere in every detail.

In the process of urban renewal, the 228 neighborhood adheres to the principle of "repairing the old as old, refreshing the old anew," preserving to the greatest extent the architectural appearance of plain walls and red tiles, the simple and clear architectural lines, and the neighborhood-shared architectural concept, striving to restore and display the former appearance of the worker's new village.

The 228 neighborhood also preserves the original flavors of Buildings No. 1 and No. 8. It is constructing a comprehensive exhibition hall for the Shanghai Workers' New Village, which integrates historical displays, cultural heritage, digital interaction, and panoramic immersive interactive experiences, allowing citizens to delve deeply into the history of changes in the workers' new village.

Creating a "15-Minute Community Life Circle" Model Neighborhood

The transformed 228 neighborhood is dedicated to becoming a comprehensive cultural and commercial entity, integrating a smart vegetable supermarket, specialty dining, cultural art training, recreational sports, long-term rental apartments, a central green plaza, and community support services. Here, the daily life requirements of surrounding community residents are met in a "one-stop" fashion.

The 228 neighborhood focuses on the development of eight buildings, with Buildings No. 1 and No. 8 unified in showcasing "worker culture" through immersive displays. Building No. 2 is transformed into a smart supermarket incorporating convenience services such as tailoring, shoe repair, and watch repair shops. Building No. 3 hosts various popular dining options, while Buildings No. 4 and No. 5 are repurposed as community party and mass service centers and a citizens' fitness center, respectively. Building No. 6 becomes a training center focused on adult vocational education, dubbed the "Twenty Thousand Households" Academy, and Building No. 7 houses talent apartments.

Currently, the 228 neighborhood has introduced community eateries such as Panda Canteen, Jiao Tea Spot, Egg Burger Art, Blue Banana Music, Time Companion Learning, Time World Diligence, and West District Boss House, among others.

Panda Canteen, with its striking red industrial-style metal screens that blend seamlessly with the architectural group of the new worker's village in the 228 neighborhood, operates under a non-profit positioning with market operations and government oversight. It strives to be a benchmark restaurant for the "15-Minute Community Life Circle," enriching the lives of the local people with flavor and zest.

Additionally, the preserved central lawn of the 228 neighborhood serves as an outdoor activity space, regularly hosting open-air markets, old movie screenings, music concerts, and children's ball games. These activities, brimming with local flavors and warmth, inject new vitality into the "old neighborhood," making the 228 neighborhood a true hotspot for quality community life and a model neighborhood combining urban renewal with the "15-Minute Community Life Circle."

The Literary Atmosphere in the Neighborhood

In September 2023, the "Book World—O2O" book lending platform was introduced into the 228 neighborhood, serving as one of the external service points of the district library. This platform offers the local readers a convenient, efficient, and diverse smart reading experience, further enhancing the literary ambiance of the area.
