On the afternoon of January 29th, Yangpu District Cultural Center and Bailian Youyicheng Shopping Mall collaborated to host a series of activities, infusing the district's intangible cultural heritage into the bustling shopping area. The event showcased captivating folk markets, delightful comedic performances by renowned artists, traditional dragon eye-dotting ceremonies, and esteemed calligraphers offering blessings on-site, all encapsulating the vibrant essence of old Shanghai as depicted in the television drama "Blossoms Shanghai.”

Dragon Quest: Enjoying Shanghai's Lunar New Year Celebration

New Experience of Intangible Cultural Heritage Theme Series Events

From February 2nd to 25th, the "Dragon Quest - Enjoying Shanghai's Lunar New Year Celebration" series of events, centered around new experiences in intangible cultural heritage, was enthusiastically held. With the theme "Dragon Quest," the event encouraged the public to collectively delve into the historical references, visual arts, and traditional culture associated with dragons in Shanghai. By integrating recommended intangible cultural heritage tours, demonstrations of skills, tastings, and engaging online interactive activities showcasing history and humanities, the event aimed to fulfill the public's aspirations for an enriched life during the traditional Spring Festival festivities.

Offline Events

In Yangpu District, several "Dragon Quest" spots were established in locations such as Wujiaochang Bailian Yiyicheng, Bailian Binjiang Shopping Centre, and Pen & Ink Studio, among others. These spots guided the public and tourists to visit and partake in interactive experiences, fostering engagement and exploration.

Dragon Quest | Dragon and Lion Dance Celebrating Chinese New Year - Wujiaochang Bailian Youyicheng Shopping Mall Festivities

The event was held at 9:30 on February 10th at Bailian Youyicheng Shopping Mall. The newly adapted "Shanghai Workers' Drums and Gongs" made a splendid debut! As a distinctive cultural emblem of Yangpu's industrial heritage, the resounding echoes of big gongs and drums, encapsulating the collective memory of industrial workers from that era, ignited the New Year atmosphere with their rhythmic beats.

Dragon Quest | Fortune Dragon Spring Festival Bazaar - Yangpu District's Intangible Cultural Heritage Chinese New Year Celebration

The event took place at 13:30 on February 10th at the Bailian Binjiang Shopping Centre. At the bazaar, the Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage project showcased Yixinzhai Halal dishes production skills, face sculpting, Chinese clothing buckle production skills, while the Yangpu District Intangible Cultural Heritage project featured straw painting, kite production, and flying skills. This provided an excellent opportunity for the public to learn about and experience intangible cultural heritage firsthand, immersing themselves in the unique charm of traditional culture.

2024 Chinese New Year Celebration

Calligrapher Writing Spring Festival Couplets Event

Recently, as part of the special cultural celebrations for the Spring Festival, titled "Chinese Spring Festival: Yangpu's Flavorful Celebration" in 2024, Yangpu District organized a calligraphy event where calligraphers wrote Spring Festival couplets to welcome the Lunar New Year. This event, in collaboration with the grassroots Shanghai Red Literary Cavalry for the Spring Festival, mobilized social resources within the district and engaged outstanding cultural groups to form a literary team. City and district-level calligraphy experts were invited to participate, adding vibrancy to the occasion with colorful Spring Festival couplets. These activities, which included writing and distributing Spring Festival couplets along with cultural performances, aimed to bring joy and peace to the community while conveying New Year blessings to the public, fostering a festive cultural atmosphere.

The inaugural Spring Festival couplet writing event took place at the Yangpu District Culture Center, where 10 esteemed calligraphers, including Tian Wenhui, Director of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, Vice President of the Shanghai Calligraphers Association, and Director of the Women's Work Committee of the City Calligraphers Association, along with members of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, were invited to write on-site, imparting their blessings for the Chinese New Year.

Engaging with Community

To enhance the festive ambiance and cultural richness of the New Year, while preserving the splendid traditions of Spring Festival folk culture, our aim is to expand the influence of the Spring Festival brand. By ensuring that culture serves the community and contributes to the joyous lives of the people, we endeavor to add vibrancy and depth to their celebrations. On January 26th, the Yangpu District Spring Festival Calligraphers' Event, featuring the writing of Spring Festival couplets, will take place at the Changhai Road Street Cultural Activity Center. The event will feature six members of the Shanghai Calligraphers Association and artists from the Shanghai Yangpu Painting Academy writing Spring Festival couplets on-site. Additionally, attendees can enjoy a spectacular performance by the cultural team, promising an event that is both lively and extraordinary.

Engaging with Park

On February 2nd, the calligraphers and the cultural team will venture into Changyang Chuanggu to engage in performances and interact with entrepreneurs on-site. They will write Chinese characters symbolizing fortune and dragons, extending New Year blessings to the entrepreneurs in the park who are engaged in cutting-edge technology research and development. We aspire for every enterprise in the park to bask in the warmth and blessings of this heartfelt affection.

Engaging with the Camp

In the form of Spring Festival couplets, we extend our heartfelt blessings and greetings to the soldiers in the camp. In the jubilant ambiance of welcoming the Dragon Lunar New Year, we foster a robust atmosphere of reverence, support, and affection for the military.

Engaging with Special People

Disabled individuals actively participate in cultural initiatives, sharing Spring Festival couplets and spreading blessings to welcome the New Year. Calligraphers actively approached individuals with special needs, writing Spring Festival couplets and lucky charms for them. They conveyed New Year blessings, along with wishes for a joyous life filled with infinite warmth.

More than 20 calligraphers have been invited to participate in this series of events, with an expected creation of over 500 pairs of spring couplets.

Experience the Essence of Traditional Chinese Culture Through Festival Foods

As the seasons transition between autumn and winter, a myriad of flavors emerge. The Yangpu District Culture Center has initiated a series of online events titled "Exploring Traditional Chinese Culture Through Festival Foods." On February 9th, we embark on a quest to discover the essence of New Year's Eve with fancy dumplings, followed by a search for the flavors of the festive season with five dumplings on February 24th. Let's embark on this journey together, embracing the warmth of winter foods and savoring the joyous atmosphere of fireworks, culinary delights, and festive cheer. We aim to educate the public on traditional foods through online platforms, preserving and passing on our rich cultural heritage. By doing so, we hope to enable everyone to partake in meaningful traditional festivals and share the joy of these celebrations together.
