At around 3 PM on October 1, 1949, amidst the solemn grandeur of the March of the Volunteers, the radiant five-starred red banner ascended steadily skyward at the inaugural ceremony of the People's Republic of China at the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing. From that day forward, the national anthem and the national flag have been the symbols of the People's Republic of China.
