Today in History丨June 7, 1988: Deng Xiaoping Met with Zbigniew Messner, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the United Workers' Party and Chairman of the Council of Ministers o June 07,2021

During his interview with Zbigniew Messner, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the United Workers' Party and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Poland, Deng noted that China's reform should be conducted in accordance with correct strategic decision. According to Deng, China is deepening reform to create better conditions for future development. We should set our sight not only on this century, but also on the next. The problem facing us now is that we will fall behind if we don't move ahead. However, if we are left behind, we will find ourselves in a blind alley. Only by deepening reform, which is overall, can we ensure that we can live in a moderately prosperous society in all respects in this century and advance further in the next century. Great risks abound in our reform, but there are good chances of success. Only with such confidence can we make proper decisions. In decision-making, two key points are worthy of being mentioned. First, we should consult the people in handling affairs, be firm and steady in making our determinations, and summarize our experience in time and correct inappropriate plans and steps to prevent minor mistakes turning into severe ones. Second, we should keep the growth of production during the reform at a proper rate, not too high or too low. In the past decade, China has developed at a speed not low. If that high speed remains in the next few years, there will be much fewer risks in deepening reform. Part of this talk is entitled "maintaining development of production at a high speed in reform", which is included in the third volume of Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping.
