How to cultivate student’s innovation ability and spirit? How to create innovation environment? How to balance teachers’ innovation spirit and expertise development? On the 4th Summit of Yangtze-Delta Principals organized by Shanghai Educational Press Group and District Bureau of Education, over 200 Presidents from “985” universities in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai and Yangtze-Delta principles talked on education development and cultivation of innovation talents.

During the summit, “Pilot Zone for Elementary Education Innovation” was inaugurated in Yangpu. It is said that during its comprehensive implementation stage from July 2009 to June 2012, Yangpu District will establish course-developing management centers in colleges and high schools.

“Students’ innovation situation is: vigorous in kindergartens, lively in elementary schools, dying in junior high schools, dead in senior high schools and reborn in colleges. Yet, their rebirths are more like clearance sale.” According to Xiangyang, Principle Assistant from Huaideyuan Elementary School in Changzhou City, different age groups have different innovation actions. Innovation mentality in kindergartens and elementary schools are very precious.

Deputy President of Zhejiang University Si Jianmin pointed out that innovation talents needed by China in the further should be compounds of curiosity, dissatisfaction, criticism, skepticism, ambition, pragmatism, as well as wisdom and confidence. He believes that in addition to thirst for knowledge, innovation talents should have integrity. The cultivation of innovation talents should start from elementary schools or kindergartens, instead of from colleges.

In response to various questions posed to elementary education, Tang Jiangpeng, Principal of Xishan Senior High School from Jiangsu Province, put forward the idea of “innovation talents do not completely equal elites”. He said that it would be very difficult to cultivate innovation talents unless the stereotype of ideal all-round developed talents was changed.

Deputy Director of Shanghai Education Commission Yin Houqing pointed out that innovation is not straight-A students’ privilege. He believes that teachers should create free environment for kids to exert their imagination from kindergartens. Schools and teachers should give students more spaces to develop on their own, other than mould them in accordance with pre-set education objectives.

Chairman of Shanghai Society of Education Zhang Minsheng pointed out that innovation talents are not “taught”. But we must create environment and encourage students to exercise their innovation.■Gu Tingting, Fu Ying
