Geographical Location

Yangpu District is located in the northeast of Shanghai Downtown, and the northwest bank of lower Huangpu River. It is on the opposite river bank of Pudong New Area, west to Hongkong District and north to Baoshan District, covering an area of 60.61 km2. Yangshupugang, a distributary of Huangpu River runs from south to north through this district, from which the name “Yangpu” derived. The shoreline of Huangpu River in this district is 15.5km (including Fuxing Island). It is connected to Pudong New Area by Yangpu Bridge, 3 river tunnels, i.e. Dalian Road, Xiangyin Road, and Jungong Road (under construction) and 6 ferry lines.

This land formed in the late of Tang Dynasty and the early of Song Dynasty, under administration of Gaochang Town, Huating County. In 1292, it was under administration of Gaochang Town, Shanghai County, and the area north to Qiujiang was under administration of Baoshan County since 1724. In 1863 and 1899, its south area along Huangpu River was part of the international settlement. In 1912, the area north to Qiujiang was under administration of Yinxing Town, Baoshan County and the area south to Qiujiang and north to settlement Yinxiang Town, Shanghai County. In 1927 when the Special Municipality of Shanghai was established, the area north to settlement was respectively part of Yinxiang District, Yinxing District and Jiangwan District while in December 1945, Yangshupu District, Yulin District and New Downtown. Yangshupu District was renamed Yangpu District in June 1950, since when the district expanded northward. In January 1960, Yulin District was merged. In September 1984, Yinxiang District and Wujiaochang Town of Baoshan County was merged. In March 1993, Xiepu Road neighborhood in Pudong was merged into Pudong New District. In June 1997, Jiangwan Airport was merged into Yangpu District from Baoshan County, and the status quo was formed ever since.

The District Government is located No. 549, Jiangpu Road. Under its administration are People’s Government of Wujiaochang Town and 11 offices, i.e. Dinghai Road, Daqiao, Pingliang Road, Jiangpu Road, Kongjiang Road, Yanxu Newly Estate, Changbai Newly Estate, Siping Road, Yinxing,Wujiaochang and New Jiangwan Town neighborhoods, and 305 residential committees.
