Launch of "Unmanned Store" of Paying by "Face Sca...
One can enter a store for shopping by "face scanning" without scanning any code by mobile phone. Lately, the first unmanned store of Suning in Shanghai -- "Suning Easy Purchase Biu" was opened in Wujiaochang, which has been the second unmanned store launched by Suning nationwide. Compared with the unmanned store opened in Nanjing this August, its greatest characteristic is realization of shopping by "face scanning" throughout the whole process.


The reporter saw sports IP products, slippers, towels and other homeware products as staples of the store. Different from previously entering a store by scanning a code, a consumer just need to download an APP for "face binding" and "face scanning" by face recognition to enter a store; after selecting products, the consumer directly passes a payment gateway without queuing for payment. The system will make "face scanning" once again to automatically identify user's identity and all the products bought and screen on top will display amount of consumption in real time and realize deduction.


According to the operation guide, the reporter scanned a code by WeChat to download the APP, entered a mobile phone number for registration, and bound ID card and bank card information, and completed face recognition to enter the store for shopping without any barrier. The whole "face binding" process took only 5 min. 


"Shopping in this way is really wonderful," said Ms. Lu working in the business district of Wujiaochang, who happened to pass the store at lunch break and bought a pair of slippers in the store out of curiosity.  She told the reporter that she felt very comfortable by selecting and buying products in such a relaxed way. In addition, she was granted with preference of RMB 30 off from payment of over RMB 31 for the first "face binding" today. 


Informed of the launch of the unmanned store in a WeChat group, Mr. Jiang came all the way from Nanhui to experience shopping in the store on the following day. "By sparing code scanning by mobile phone, 'face scanning' and paying seems more convenient and quick," said Mr. Jiang. Whereas, he said, there are few products in the store which may not suffice to the shopping demand so it is expected to supply more categories of products in the future. 


In addition to application of face recognition function, the store also makes use of all kinds of "big data", builds customer-store relations in the customer flow analysis system, and calculates conversion rate of sales by making statistics on number of customers in the store and actual sales generated. Moreover, it records tracks of movement of consumers, which counter is the most popular, and which product is most frequently picked up and bases the following promotion of user experience on such data.


"So far, about 30% of labor cost has been saved in the unmanned store," told the head of the store to the reporter. As others come into service in the unmanned store in the days to come, labor costs in cashier, warehousing and other procedures may fall as well. In the future, the pattern will be further implemented and promoted in other cities and regions for sale of small home appliances, 3C products, some baby and maternal products and other categories of products.
