2,000 Musicians Blowing “CHUNGHWA CLARION” at Bund
In the forthcoming 2012 Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, a pipe music band parade will be presented with more than 2,000 musicians from 35 Chinese and foreign music bands giving performance on 9 large cruise ships along the Huangpu River between the Bund and the Oriental Pearl Tower, “blowing the Chunghwa Clarion”, said the director-in-chief of Chinese Military Band Zou Rui at a current press conference.

The 2012 Shanghai International Pipe Music Festival, as part of Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, which is one of the oldest music festival in China, has been held in Yangpu District annually since 2008 and is becoming more and more famous in the world pipe music circle.

It is said that this year’s music festival attracts more than 3,500 musicians of near 60 pipe music bands from European, American, Asian countries. The world famous musician, composer of the Lord of the Rings, Johan De Meij is invited to conduct atShanghaiOrientalArtCenterin a performance with Chinese Military Band, presenting a high level music gala on April 29.

The pipe music band parade along theHuangpuRiveras the most characteristic activity of the music festival will start at 10:40 am on April 29. The bands including Chinese Military Band and PLA Navy Band carried by nine cruise ships with one dragon boat leading at the front will set off at the Qinhuangdao Road Water Entrance of 2010 Shanghai Expo at the riverside development zone of Yangpu District. The bands will rotate to give performance on the parade.

Chen Hongguang, deputy director of the District Publicity Department, said that the opening performance of the pipe music festival held on April 29 at the Bund, one of the most famous landmark ofShanghai, which coincides with the May Day Holiday, will become a good opportunity to showShanghai’s splendid culture charms to domestic and foreign visitors.

Jiang Siwen, chairman of Chinese Musicians Association Pipe Music Branch, said that Pipe music was first introduced from Western Europe toChinamore than 100 years ago. So far more than 20 provinces and municipals inChinahave established pipe music bands. Pipe music with passionate charm and infectious power is becoming more and more popular inChina. It is estimated that this pipe music festival has attracted near 300 thousand audiences domestically and overseas in the last four years.
